San Francisco Mortuary Indexing Project
Phase 1: Halsted

TUTORIAL

Welcome to Phase 1 of this indexing project.

After you have initially registered and went through the login page, you will have the option to begin indexing. This tutorial describes the indexing page and process.

The earlier Halsted files only had one sheet, with a front and back page. Later files had multiple sheets in each file. The files were filmed in order. So, imagine browsing through a file cabinet, and you will get an idea as to how the page images will appear here (for more detail, see Understanding the Virtual Cabinet).

Your task is determine who the file belonged to for each page image. NOT every page image will have the deceased individual's information on it. You may need to look at the page images before the one you are working on. The information you want to collect is:

  • Last name
  • First name
  • Middle name (or initial)
  • Date of death
The first and last name fields are required. But, please try to find the rest of the information if it exists.

Also, please don't enter information that you cannot find on these page images (for example, you might be tempted to check the death index to find a missing date). Though, you should copy for each page image as much as the deceased individual's information as you can determine, even though it may not appear on that particular page image.

If, for some reason, there is no image or the page image is completely blank, you will have the option to flag it as unknown.

Okay, let's begin.
